Brazilian conceptual artist Rivane Neuenschwander creates playful, ephemeral and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author and viewer, object and memory, permanence and temporality. Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other is the artist’s first major midcareer survey. Covering a decade of work, the exhibition reveals a wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice that merges painting, photography, film, sculpture, installation and collaborative action. Like her predecessors Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Neuenschwander is at once artistic instigator, commissioning agent and social organizer, exploring themes such as nature, language, time and the poetry of the quotidian.

Works in the exhibition will include drawings exposed to equatorial rains as they morph into exquisite continental maps; small circles of adhesive applied to the gallery floor to create over time a physical map of the movements of visitors in the exhibition space; and an immersive installation that investigates paranoia in an age in which privacy is no longer an individual's natural right, among many others.

First Love (2005)

One of the works in the exhibition, titled First Love, is dependent on audience participation. In this work, people are asked to describe their “first love” to a forensic sketch artist.

To schedule a session with the sketch artist, e-mail kemper-ed@wustl.edu and we will be in touch to find an available date that works for you. (Please note that each session will take approximately two hours.)
